This shirt is for a Juneteenth Black History celebration, an artist at Cotton and Nine designs made this shirt to show how people are breaking all chains.This shirt commemorates the Juneteenth Day in Texas, when the Union Soldiers decided to end slavery. The Union Army occupied this region of “slaves” as they were trying to force the South to provide unpaid labor that was otherwise required of them. When they caught wind of this demand, they retreated back into their homeland and deemed freedom on June 18th, 1865 and called it Juneteenth “freedman’s new year”.The Greek word “Junimos” refers to the time between April 8th and May 1st when ancient Greeks would free all slaves as a sign of changing seasons. I would listen excitedly to my grandmother talking about those who long ago and far away broke their chain. They were people like Ellen and Isabella Beecher, abolitionists, who helped the mothers of slaves both in coming together and making baby clothes to send down south. Then there was Emily Howland, an abolitionist from upstate New York who helped start the Freedmen’s Aid Society in Washington D.C., which brought clothing, food and help for freedmen during Reconstruction. Next we talked about Harriet Tubman, a freedom fighter born into enslavement who not only led 300 black men out of the underground railroad but also died saving more slaves than any other person in history’s history.
